Turkmenistan, a country in Central Asia, gained independence in 1991. It has a population of about 6.56 million in January 2024. The Turkmen are Sunni Muslims. Like most nomads in the region, they follow Islam. The capital and largest city is Ashgabat. Turkmen culture is rich with traditions, particularly in music, dance, and carpet weaving. The main language is Turkmen, and Russian is also widely spoken. The predominant religion is Islam, primarily Sunni. Turkmen people are known for their hospitality and a strong sense of cultural identity. The country features diverse landscapes, including deserts, mountains, and the Caspian Sea coastline. Notable sites include the ancient city of Merv, the Darvaza gas crater, also known as the “Door to Hell,” and the beautiful Ruhnama Park in Ashgabat.
